the rewards of determination

Week 9: The Reward and New Skills

Focus: Identifying the rewards and skills gained from overcoming challenges.

  1. CBT Focus: Highlighting how overcoming negative thought patterns leads to tangible rewards, whether emotional, mental, or physical.
  2. Assessment Tool: Goal Achievement Inventory – assessing the progress toward achieving goals and new skills.
  3. Expressive Arts Activity:
    • Children: Create a “Reward Box” where they list or draw all the skills and rewards they’ve gained from overcoming challenges.
    • Adults: Create a journal entry reflecting on the personal and professional rewards gained through perseverance and resilience.

  1. Experiential Family Therapy Activity: Families share the "rewards" (skills, insights, emotional growth) they have gained individually and collectively from facing challenges together.
  2. Executive Functioning Homework Assignment:
    • Children: Identify a specific skill they’ve developed (e.g., persistence, patience), and practice using it in a new context.
    • Adults: Reflect on a personal or professional reward they’ve achieved and plan how they will apply this newfound strength or insight to future challenges.

 Homework Assignment for Week 9:

  • Parent-Child Attachment Activity: Create a "Family Achievement Poster"—a collaborative visual that shows the skills each family member has gained and how they have grown through facing challenges.
  • Executive Functioning Activity:
    • Children: Choose a new skill they’ve developed (e.g., emotional regulation or problem-solving) and practice using it in a new situation. Reflect with a parent about how they’re using the skill.
    • Adults: Apply a recently developed strength (e.g., resilience or leadership) to a new challenge or situation and write about how it’s impacting their growth.
